νοῦς
nous
Noun, masculine
mind, understanding, reason

Definition

The rational faculty — the mind as seat of understanding, discernment, and moral reasoning. Paul calls for the renewal of the nous (Rom 12:2) and speaks of having 'the mind [nous] of Christ' (1 Cor 2:16).

Usage & Theological Significance

The mind is the battlefield of sanctification. Idolatry is a problem of the nous — suppressing truth (Rom 1:18). Renewal of the nous is how transformation happens: thinking differently, seeing reality as God sees it.

Key Bible Verses

Romans 12:2 Be transformed by the renewing of your mind [nous].
1 Corinthians 2:16 We have the mind [nous] of Christ.
Ephesians 4:23 Be renewed in the spirit of your minds [nous].

Word Study

The renewed nous is central to Paul's ethics — not rule-following but transformed perception. Having the 'mind of Christ' means seeing situations as Christ sees them, then acting accordingly. This is sanctification from the inside out.
