ὁπότε
hopóte
Conjunction
When, At Which Time

Definition

Hopóte (ὁπότε) is a temporal conjunction meaning when, at which time, whenever. It combines the relative pronoun with pote (at some time). It appears in the Gospels to mark significant moments.

Usage & Theological Significance

In Luke 6:3, Jesus asks: 'Have you never read what David did when he and his companions were hungry?' Jesus uses this historical moment to establish that human need can take precedence over ceremonial law when rightly understood. The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. Hopóte marks a moment of necessity that revealed a principle of mercy. Throughout Scripture, God's timing is sovereign: 'when the set time had fully come, God sent his Son' (Galatians 4:4).
