G3709 · Greek · New Testament
ὀργή
orge
Noun, feminine
wrath, anger, indignation

Definition

Wrath — divine or human anger that is settled and purposeful, not explosive passion. The NT's teaching on God's wrath (Rom 1:18) must be understood in light of his justice and righteousness, not human rage.

Usage & Theological Significance

Paul's theology in Romans 1-3 argues that God's wrath (orge) is revealed against all unrighteousness — it is the negative side of his holiness, the necessary response of a just God to sin.

Key Bible Verses

Romans 1:18 For the wrath [orge] of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness.
Ephesians 2:3 We were by nature children of wrath [orge], like the rest of mankind.
Revelation 6:17 For the great day of their wrath [orge] has come.

Word Study

The same God who is love (1 John 4:8) is the God whose orge is revealed. These are not contradictions but aspects of his perfect character. The cross is the place where God's wrath and God's love meet — satisfying both.
