ὀρεινός
oreinós
Adjective
Mountainous, Hill Country

Definition

Oreinós (ὀρεινός) means mountainous, hilly, of the hill country. Related to oros (mountain). It appears in Luke's Gospel describing Judean geography.

Usage & Theological Significance

Luke 1:39: 'Mary got ready and hurried to a town in the hill country of Judea.' Newly pregnant with Jesus, Mary travels to visit Elizabeth — a journey of about 80 miles through mountainous terrain. This was not casual travel; it was urgent, faith-driven movement. Mary needed to see the sign Gabriel promised — Elizabeth's miraculous pregnancy. The meeting produces the Magnificat (Luke 1:46-55), one of Scripture's greatest songs. The hill country becomes the stage for the meeting of the old covenant (John the Baptist) and the new (Jesus) — both still in the womb.
