Περιδεω
Perideō
Verb
To Bind Around / To Tie Around

Definition

From peri (around) and deō (to bind). To bind around, to tie around. Used of the cloth wrapped around Lazarus's face when he was raised from the dead.

Usage & Theological Significance

When Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead, Lazarus came out with his face 'wrapped with a cloth' (John 11:44). Jesus commanded: 'Take off the grave clothes and let him go.' This vivid detail pictures the believer's need to be freed from the remnants of death even after receiving new life. Salvation brings life; sanctification removes the grave clothes.
