ἀνάψυξις
Anapsuxis
Noun, feminine
Refreshing, Relief, Revival

Definition

The Greek noun anapsuxis means refreshing, cooling relief, or revival — literally a breathing again after breathlessness. Occurring only once in the NT (Acts 3:20), it describes the 'times of refreshing' that come from the presence of the Lord in the eschatological age.

Usage & Theological Significance

Peter's sermon at Solomon's Portico promises anapsuxis — refreshing from the presence of the Lord — to those who repent and turn to God (Acts 3:19–20). This is eschatological language: the kingdom age brings a great refresh and revival, climaxing in Christ's return. The word suggests that spiritual life can become parched and arid, but God's presence is like cooling relief to an overheated soul. This one-word sermon on revival: God's presence refreshes what sin and suffering have depleted.
