Definition

From peri (around) and oikeō (to dwell). To live in the neighborhood, to be a neighbor. Used of those who lived near Elizabeth and Zechariah.

Usage & Theological Significance

When Elizabeth gave birth to John, her neighbors and relatives rejoiced with her (Luke 1:58). The community witnessed God's faithfulness. God's blessings overflow to touch entire neighborhoods. The Christian life is not lived in isolation but in visible community.
