peripoieomai
Verb
to acquire for oneself, preserve, save

Definition

Peripoieomai (G4046) means to secure something as one's own possession — to deliberately acquire, preserve, and protect. In Acts 20:28 Paul uses it in one of the most theologically dense statements in Scripture: 'Be shepherds of the church of God, which he bought [periepoisato] with his own blood.' God acquired the church as His own at infinite cost.

Usage & Theological Significance

The word is connected to the Old Testament concept of God's segulah (special possession/treasure). Titus 2:14 says Christ purified for Himself 'a people that are his very own [periousion].' You are not accidentally or randomly saved — you are God's deliberately acquired, carefully preserved treasure. The same verb used for preserving one's life (Luke 17:33) is used for God preserving His people.
