Περισπαω
Perispaō
Verb
To Be Distracted / To Be Pulled Away

Definition

From peri (around) and spaō (to draw). To be drawn around in different directions, to be distracted, to be pulled away from what matters. Used of Martha's distraction with preparations.

Usage & Theological Significance

Martha was 'distracted by all the preparations' while Mary sat at Jesus' feet (Luke 10:40). This single word captures one of the greatest spiritual dangers: being so busy with good things that we miss the best thing. Activity for God can become a substitute for intimacy with God.
