Περπερευομαι
Perpereuomai
Verb
To Brag / To Boast / To Be Vainglorious

Definition

Of uncertain origin. To brag, to be boastful, to be a windbag. Used only in 1 Corinthians 13:4 — 'love does not boast.'

Usage & Theological Significance

In Paul's great hymn to love, he declares that love 'does not boast' (1 Corinthians 13:4). Boasting is self-promotion — the opposite of love, which seeks the good of others. Love and pride cannot coexist. Where love increases, self-promotion decreases. The greatest demonstration of un-boastful love was Christ's kenosis — emptying Himself of glory to become a servant (Philippians 2:7).
