Noun, Feminine
Spring / Fountain / Source / Well

Definition

A spring, fountain, or well — a natural source of flowing water. Jesus used this metaphor powerfully of the living water that springs up to eternal life.

Usage & Theological Significance

Jesus told the Samaritan woman: 'The water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life' (John 4:14). James notes that a spring cannot produce both fresh and salt water (James 3:11) — a person's speech should be consistent. In Revelation, the Lamb leads to 'springs of living water' (Revelation 7:17). Christ is the ultimate spring — inexhaustible, life-giving, and pure.
