Πηρα
Pēra
Noun, Feminine
Bag / Wallet / Leather Pouch

Definition

A leather bag or traveler's wallet used for carrying provisions. Jesus instructed His disciples to take no bag on their mission, teaching radical dependence on God's provision.

Usage & Theological Significance

Jesus sent out His disciples with the instruction: 'Take nothing for the journey — no staff, no bag, no bread, no money, no extra shirt' (Luke 9:3). This was not about poverty as a virtue but about demonstrating that God Himself is sufficient provision. When they returned, Jesus asked: 'Did you lack anything?' They answered: 'Nothing' (Luke 22:35).
