Πιαζω
Piazō
Verb
To Seize / To Arrest / To Catch

Definition

To seize, to take hold of, to arrest, to catch. Used of attempts to arrest Jesus and of catching fish. A word of forceful, purposeful grasping.

Usage & Theological Significance

Multiple times the Jewish authorities tried to arrest Jesus but could not, 'because his hour had not yet come' (John 7:30). When His hour finally arrived, Jesus allowed Himself to be seized (John 18:12). This shows sovereign timing: no one took Jesus' life — He laid it down voluntarily at the appointed moment.
