Noun, Masculine
Platter / Dish / Board

Definition

A flat board, platter, or dish. Used of the platter on which John the Baptist's head was brought — one of the NT's most horrifying images.

Usage & Theological Significance

Herodias' daughter asked for John the Baptist's head 'on a platter' (Matthew 14:8). This gruesome request, fulfilled by a weak king's rash oath, illustrates the deadly consequences of moral compromise. Herod's foolish promise, Herodias' vindictiveness, and the girl's manipulation combined to murder God's prophet.
