ποιέω
poieō
Verb
to do, to make, to create

Definition

To do, to make, to create, to produce, to perform. Poieō is the general verb for action and making — appearing over 570 times in the NT. It covers God's creative acts, human deeds, and the performance of religious duties. It gives us 'poet' (a maker).

Usage & Theological Significance

God is the ultimate poiētēs (maker): 'He made the world and everything in it' (Acts 17:24). Jesus said, 'My Father is always working, and I too am working' (John 5:17). Believers are 'God's handiwork [poiēma], created in Christ Jesus to do good works' (Ephesians 2:10). The Christian call is not passive contemplation but active doing — 'Be doers of the word, and not hearers only' (James 1:22).
