ὑπείκω
hypeíkō
Verb
To Submit, To Yield

Definition

Hypeíkō (ὑπείκω) means to submit, to yield, to give way. It conveys deference to authority without resistance. Appears once in the NT.

Usage & Theological Significance

Hebrews 13:17: 'Have confidence in your leaders and submit to their authority, because they keep watch over you as those who must give an account.' The logic is pastoral accountability: leaders will answer to God for souls in their care. Christian submission is not servility but wisdom. It assumes leaders who are themselves submitted to God's Word. When leaders lead faithfully and congregants submit willingly, ministry becomes joy rather than burden.

Key Bible Verses
