φῶς
phōs
Noun, neuter
light, radiance, illumination

Definition

Light — physical illumination and its profound spiritual symbolism. Phōs represents truth, goodness, divine presence, and revelation. It stands opposite skotos (darkness), which represents sin, ignorance, and evil. Light was the first thing God created (Genesis 1:3).

Usage & Theological Significance

Jesus declared, 'I am the light of the world' (John 8:12) — and extended it: 'You are the light of the world' (Matthew 5:14). Light reveals, exposes, guides, and gives life. 'God is light, and in him is no darkness at all' (1 John 1:5). The gospel brings people 'out of darkness into his wonderful light' (1 Peter 2:9). In the new creation, God Himself will be the light — no sun needed (Revelation 21:23).
