αὐλίζομαι
Aulizomai
Verb
To Lodge / To Pass the Night

Definition

The Greek verb aulizomai means to lodge or to pass the night — originally in a courtyard (aulē) or in the open air, and later extended to mean finding lodging overnight. Both New Testament occurrences describe Jesus and His disciples spending nights on the Mount of Olives during Passion Week.

Usage & Theological Significance

Matthew 21:17 and Luke 21:37 report that during Jesus' final week, he spent nights on the Mount of Olives — the place of God's presence departing and returning in prophecy (Zechariah 14:4). In aulizomai we see the incarnate Lord as pilgrim and sojourner, resting in a place of prophetic significance, anticipating Gethsemane and resurrection.
