בְּ
Be
Preposition
In, by, with, at, through

Definition

The Hebrew preposition be (בְּ) is among the most common particles in the Old Testament, functioning as a versatile prefix attached directly to nouns. It denotes location (in, at), instrument (by, with), time (at, during), means (through), and manner (in). It appears tens of thousands of times throughout Scripture.

Usage & Theological Significance

Though be is grammatically a simple preposition, its theological weight in key phrases is immense. Bere'shit ("in the beginning," Genesis 1:1) launches the entire biblical narrative. Berit (covenant) is derived from related roots. The preposition frames humanity's position — dwelling in God's presence, walking in His ways, trusting in His name. Nearly every major theological declaration employs be to locate the believer in relationship to God.
