H132 · Hebrew · Old Testament
אדמוני
Admoniy
Adjective
Ruddy, Reddish-complexioned

Definition

The Hebrew adjective admoniy describes someone with a reddish or ruddy complexion. Used in the Old Testament to describe Esau at birth (Genesis 25:25) and David when brought before Samuel (1 Samuel 16:12).

Usage & Theological Significance

The appearance of admoniy at two pivotal moments in redemptive history is striking. Esau's redness foreshadows his name Edom (Red) and his earthly nature. David's ruddiness is paired with beautiful eyes — yet God explicitly tells Samuel He does not judge by outward appearance but by the heart (1 Samuel 16:7). David's vigor is real, but his election is entirely of grace.
