Uzal
Proper noun, masculine
Uzal (wander)

Definition

The name Uzal appears in Genesis 10:27 and 1 Chronicles 1:21 as a son of Joktan in the Table of Nations, and also in Ezekiel 27:19 as a trading city that supplied iron and spices to Tyre. Ancient sources identify Uzal with Sana'a, the capital of Yemen.

Usage & Theological Significance

Uzal's inclusion in the Table of Nations (Genesis 10) demonstrates that God's concern spans all peoples and cultures — not just Israel. The nations listed in Genesis 10 are not mere historical footnotes; they represent the full scope of humanity that God intends to redeem through Abraham's offspring. The later reference in Ezekiel to Uzal as a trading partner of Tyre (the archetypal commercial city) highlights how geography and economics were part of Israel's prophetic horizon.
