Zadon
Noun, masculine
Arrogance / Insolence / Pride

Definition

The Hebrew word zadon denotes insolent pride, arrogance, or presumptuous behavior β€” a willful defiance of divine or human authority. It describes the attitude of one who acts as though they are above accountability.

Usage & Theological Significance

Zadon is one of Scripture's most theologically loaded words for sin. Unlike ordinary transgression (chata) or iniquity (avon), zadon captures the sin of deliberate, contemptuous pride β€” the refusal to acknowledge any authority above oneself. Proverbs repeatedly identifies zadon as the root of conflict and destruction (Proverbs 13:10; 21:24). The prophets condemn the zadon of Babylon, Edom, and Israel's leaders. Theologically, zadon is the spiritual posture that opposes itself to God most fundamentally β€” it is the Luciferian sin of 'I will be like the Most High' (Isaiah 14:14). Humility (anavah) is its antidote.
