Χ—ΦΈΧ™ΦΈΧ”
chayah
Verb
To live, be alive, revive, restore to life

Definition

A primitive root, chayah means to have life, to be alive, or to remain alive. It can also mean to revive, to be quickened, or to be restored to life and health. It encompasses everything from the literal act of breathing to figurative concepts of flourishing and restoration.

Usage & Theological Significance

Life (chayah) is a gift from God, the source and sustainer of all life. The verb is used to describe both physical and spiritual life. A key theological theme is that true life is found in a right relationship with God. In Deuteronomy, Moses tells Israel that obeying God's commands is the way "that you may live (chayah)." In the Psalms and prophets, it is used for the restoration and revival of God's people. This concept of God-given life and revival provides a foundation for the New Testament's teaching on eternal life and being "born again."
