chamor
Noun, masculine
a donkey

Definition

The common domesticated donkey, one of the most important animals in ancient Israel. Far from lowly, the donkey was a symbol of peace and royal humility. Kings rode donkeys in times of peace (versus horses in war). The donkey carried burdens, plowed fields, and transported families — the backbone of daily life.

Usage & Theological Significance

The chamor carries profound messianic significance. Zechariah 9:9 prophesied the King would come 'riding on a donkey' — fulfilled in Jesus's triumphal entry. The donkey represents humble kingship, the opposite of militaristic power. While horses symbolized war and Egypt's might, the donkey symbolized peace and God's alternative kingdom.
