Definition

A personal name meaning 'my brother has arisen,' from ach and qum (to arise). He protected Jeremiah from execution and fathered Gedaliah the governor.

Usage & Theological Significance

Achiqam protected Jeremiah's life (Jeremiah 26:24) -- without which much of the prophetic writings might have been lost. His son Gedaliah governed Judah after Babylon's conquest. The righteous remnant who stands for God's prophet becomes part of redemptive history.
