אַחְיָה
Achiyah
Proper noun, masculine
Yah is my brother

Definition

The Hebrew name Achiyah (also spelled Ahijah) means "Yah is my brother" or "brother of Yahweh." It combines ach (brother, H251) with Yah (the LORD, H3050). The name is borne by at least six men in the Old Testament, the most prominent being Ahijah the prophet from Shiloh.

Usage & Theological Significance

Ahijah the Shilonite was the prophet who announced God's judgment on Solomon — that the kingdom would be torn in ten parts and given to Jeroboam (1 Kings 11:29–39). His name encapsulates the covenantal theme that Yahweh is not distant but relationally near, "a brother" who speaks through His servants. The prophetic office demonstrates that God raises up voices to call His people back to covenant faithfulness, even when judgment must come.
