אֲחַשְׁוֵרוֹשׁ
Achashverosh
Proper noun -- royal name
Ahasuerus / Xerxes

Definition

The Hebrew form of the Persian royal name Xerxes I. He ruled 127 provinces from India to Ethiopia and is the king in the book of Esther.

Usage & Theological Significance

Ahasuerus (historically Xerxes I, 486-465 BC) is the king through whom God preserved the Jewish people from Haman's genocide. The book of Esther never names God -- yet His fingerprints are on every 'coincidence': the king's sleepless night, the chance reading of Mordecai's record, Esther's courage. 'All things work together for good' (Romans 8:28).

Key Bible Verses
