יַעַן
Yaan
Conjunction / Preposition
Because, Forasmuch As, Therefore

Definition

The Hebrew yaan is a causal conjunction meaning 'because' or 'forasmuch as' — typically introducing the grounds for a divine action, blessing, or judgment. It links cause with effect in prophetic and legal reasoning.

Usage & Theological Significance

Yaan is the hinge word of divine logic — the 'because' that reveals how God reasons and acts. In prophetic judgment oracles (especially Ezekiel), God repeatedly prefaces His actions with yaan: 'Because you did this... therefore I will...' This structure reveals that divine judgment is not arbitrary but causally connected to human action. Equally, divine blessing is causally connected to faithfulness: 'Because Abraham obeyed... I will greatly multiply your offspring' (Genesis 22:16-18). Yaan invites careful moral and spiritual reasoning: what we do has real consequences before a God who is both just and consistent. The logic of yaan is ultimately a logic of accountability — a truth that culminates in Christ's bearing the because of our sin.
