Yeshua
Noun, proper (masculine)
Salvation / Jeshua

Definition

The Hebrew name Yeshua is a contracted form of Yehoshua (Joshua) meaning 'the LORD saves' or 'salvation.' It appears as both a proper name (Jeshua/Joshua in post-exilic texts) and carries the full theological weight of divine salvation.

Usage & Theological Significance

Yeshua is the Hebrew name rendered 'Jesus' in Greek (Iēsous). The name itself is a declaration of divine mission: 'You are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins' (Matthew 1:21). In post-exilic texts, Jeshua/Yeshua the high priest (Ezra 2:2, Zechariah 3) foreshadows the priestly and saving work of the ultimate Yeshua. The name encapsulates the entire redemptive program of God.
