H3519 · Hebrew · Old Testament
כָּבוֹד
Kavod
Noun, masculine
Glory / Weight / Honor

Definition

The Hebrew kavod (H3519) means glory, honor, abundance, or weight. Its root (kaved) means 'heavy' — that which has substance and weightiness. The glory of God (kavod YHWH) is the manifest presence of His infinite being and holiness.

Usage & Theological Significance

No word better captures Israel's experience of God than kavod. The kavod YHWH filled the tabernacle and temple as a pillar of cloud and fire. Ezekiel watches this glory depart from a sinful temple and return to the restored temple. The New Testament declares that this same glory 'became flesh and dwelt among us' (John 1:14) in Jesus Christ — the full and final kavod of God in human form.
