כַּרְמֶל
karmel
Noun, masculine
Fruitful Field, Garden Land

Definition

Karmel (כַּרְמֶל) means fruitful field, garden land, orchard. It can also mean 'fresh grain' or 'full ears of grain.' Mount Carmel takes its name from this word — the 'fruitful mountain.'

Usage & Theological Significance

Isaiah 32:15: 'till the Spirit is poured upon us from on high, and the desert becomes a fertile field, and the fertile field seems like a forest.' The transformation from desert to karmel is a prophetic image of the Holy Spirit's outpouring — turning barrenness into abundance. Isaiah 35:2: 'it will burst into bloom... the glory of Lebanon will be given to it, the splendor of Carmel and Sharon.' Leviticus 2:14 uses karmel for fresh grain offered as firstfruits — the best of the harvest given to God.
