maaleh
Noun, Masculine
Ascent, going up, steep place, elevation

Definition

From H5927 (alah, 'to go up/ascend'). Maaleh describes an upward incline, a steep path leading to a higher place β€” both physically and metaphorically. Related to maalot, the 'steps' or 'ascents' of the Psalms of Ascent (Pss. 120–134).

Usage & Theological Significance

The concept of maaleh β€” going up β€” carries profound spiritual significance in Scripture. Jerusalem sits on elevated ground; pilgrims literally 'went up' to Zion three times a year. The Psalms of Ascent (Songs of maalot) were sung on this journey, each step upward a step toward God's presence. The Ascension of Christ is the ultimate maaleh β€” Jesus went up to the right hand of the Father, and those who are in Him are counted as seated in the heavenly places. The Christian life is an upward journey β€” pressing toward the prize (Phil. 3:14), ascending in worship and in sanctification.
