מָקוֹר
māqôr
Noun, masculine
Fountain, Source, Spring

Definition

Māqôr (מָקוֹר) means fountain, source, spring — the origin point from which water flows. It is used both literally and as one of Scripture's richest metaphors for life, wisdom, and God Himself.

Usage & Theological Significance

Jeremiah 2:13: 'My people have committed two sins: They have forsaken me, the spring of living water, and have dug their own cisterns, broken cisterns that cannot hold water.' This is the core indictment of all idolatry: abandoning the infinite fountain for cracked containers. Psalm 36:9: 'For with you is the fountain of life; in your light we see light.' Proverbs 14:27: 'The fear of the LORD is a fountain of life.' God is not a reservoir — He is a spring. His supply never runs dry; His grace is ever-flowing.
