אֶלְקָנָה
Elqanah
Proper Name, masculine
God has created/possessed

Definition

The name Elqanah combines El (God) and qanah (to create, acquire, possess), meaning "God has created" or "God has possessed." Most notably, it was the name of Hannah's husband and Samuel's father (1 Samuel 1), as well as a common Levitical name appearing multiple times in Chronicles.

Usage & Theological Significance

Elqanah's household illustrates God's sovereignty over family, barrenness, and calling. Though Peninnah had children and Hannah had none, Elqanah loved Hannah deeply — and God remembered Hannah (1 Samuel 1:19). The son born of that remembered womb, Samuel, would anoint Israel's greatest kings. Elqanah — "God has possessed" — points to a profound truth: God owns every life, including those whose purposes seem delayed. His acquisition of a life means its fruitfulness is guaranteed on His timeline.
