אֶלְתּוֹלַד
Eltolad
Proper Noun (place name)
God generates / my kindred is God

Definition

Eltolad (אֶלְתּוֹלַד) is a Negev town in Judah later assigned to Simeon (Joshua 15:30; 19:4). The name combines El (God) with tolad (birth, generation — from yalad, to bear/beget). Possible meanings: "God is my kindred" or "God generates descendants."

Usage & Theological Significance

Negev town names often function as confessions of faith embedded in the landscape. Eltolad — "God is my kindred" — speaks to the covenant relationship where God is not just sovereign over Israel but their Father (Isaiah 63:16). The NT brings this to fullness: those born of the Spirit are children of God (John 1:12–13; Galatians 4:4–7). God is literally the Father of those who believe — Eltolad becomes a theological truth accessible to all who are born again.
