נְפִילִים
Nephilim
Noun, masculine plural
Giants, fallen ones

Definition

The Hebrew word Nephilim refers to a race of giants or mighty beings who existed before and after the Flood. The term is often connected to the root naphal (to fall), suggesting 'fallen ones.' They were renowned for their great size and strength.

Usage & Theological Significance

Nephilim represents one of the most mysterious terms in Scripture. Their appearance in Genesis 6 precedes the judgment of the Flood, while their presence in the land of Canaan (Numbers 13:33) terrified the Israelite spies. They symbolize the consequences of rebellion against God and the corruption of His created order.
