אַמְצִי
Amtsi
Proper Name, masculine
My strength, strong one

Definition

The name Amtsi (or Amzi) is a shortened form derived from amats (to be strong), meaning "my strength" or "strong one." It appears twice in the Old Testament: once as a Levitical ancestor of temple singers (1 Chronicles 6:46) and once as the father of Adaiah, a priest who returned from exile (Nehemiah 11:12).

Usage & Theological Significance

The name's use among Levites and priests — those entrusted with the holiest duties of temple worship and teaching — suggests that strength in God's service is a defining characteristic. Both bearers of this name served in contexts of continuity and restoration: one traced the lineage of temple singers from Merari, another was part of the restoration community returning from Babylon. God's strength sustains His servants across generations and through exile.
