אֲמַצְיָה
Amatsyah
Proper noun, masculine
Amaziah — Yahweh is strong

Definition

The Hebrew proper name Amatsyah means 'Yahweh is strong' or 'Yahweh has strengthened.' Composed of amats (to be strong) and Yah (YHWH's shortened name). Several men bear this name, most notably Amaziah the king of Judah (2 Kings 14) and Amaziah the priest of Bethel who opposed Amos.

Usage & Theological Significance

Names in the Old Testament carry theological weight. Amatsyah proclaims a confession: the LORD is the source of all strength. King Amaziah's name was both a promise and a challenge — to trust in Yahweh's strength rather than his own. His failure to follow God wholeheartedly (2 Chronicles 25:2) illustrates the tragic gap between bearing God's name and living in God's power.
