עֹז
oz
Noun, masculine
strength, might, power, refuge

Definition

A rich word for potent strength — the strength that provides security and enables victory. Oz can describe the physical might of warriors or animals, the military strength of fortifications, and supremely the incomparable power of God that sustains and delivers his people.

Usage & Theological Significance

The Psalms celebrate God as the oz of Israel: 'The LORD is my strength and my song' (Ps 118:14). This is not abstract theology but personal experience — God's power exercised on behalf of the weak. The magnificent Psalm 29 thunders 'the LORD will give oz to his people' as its climax. In the Psalter, to praise God's oz is to declare that his power is available to those who trust him.

Key Bible Verses

Psalm 28:7 The LORD is my strength and my shield; my heart trusted in him, and I am helped.
Psalm 29:11 The LORD will give strength unto his people; the LORD will bless his people with peace.
Isaiah 12:2 Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust, and not be afraid: for the LORD JEHOVAH is my strength and my song.
