עַצֶּבֶת
Atstseveth
Noun, feminine
Grief, pain, wound

Definition

Atstseveth (H6094) means grief, pain, a wound, or deep sorrow. It is an intensified form of the root that gives etsev (pain/toil). It describes the piercing sorrow of betrayal, loss, or the suffering of the righteous.

Usage & Theological Significance

Psalm 16:4 speaks of 'sorrows' multiplied for those who run after other gods — the idol worshiper suffers grief (atstseveth). This grief is not merely emotional but covenantal: spiritual adultery brings spiritual pain. Contrasted with the overflowing joy of those who keep covenant with God. The Servant of Isaiah bears atstseveth on behalf of the people (Isaiah 53:3–4).
