Perets
Proper noun / Noun
Perez; Breach; Breaking Through

Definition

The name Perez (son of Judah by Tamar), meaning 'breach' or 'breaking through' β€” carried in the Messianic genealogy from Genesis through Matthew.

Usage & Theological Significance

The Hebrew Perets (breach, breaking through) is born in one of the OT's most scandalous narratives: Judah and his daughter-in-law Tamar (Genesis 38). The name was given because Perez thrust past his twin brother at birth: 'What a breach you have made for yourself!' (Genesis 38:29). Despite this irregular origin, Perets appears in the Messianic genealogy: he is the ancestor of Boaz, who is the ancestor of Jesse, David, and ultimately Jesus (Ruth 4:18-22; Matthew 1:3).

Perets is a theological emblem of grace overcoming shame. Born from an illicit union, conceived in a story of deception, his very name is an accusation β€” 'breach-maker.' Yet he stands in the line of the King of kings. Matthew 1:3 names him without apology in Jesus' genealogy, alongside Tamar (another irregular figure). The Messianic line runs through broken, complicated, even scandalous lives β€” because the point is not human worthiness but divine perseverance. God's purpose breaks through every obstacle, every moral failure, every 'what a breach you have made' β€” to bring forth the One who heals all breaches.
