צֶמַח
tsemach
Noun, masculine
sprout, branch, growth

Definition

A sprouting or growth from the ground. Prophetically, 'the Branch' (tsemach) is a key messianic title — the shoot from David's line who would reign in righteousness (Jer 23:5; Zech 3:8; 6:12).

Usage & Theological Significance

The messianic 'Branch' passages are among the OT's clearest prophecies. Zechariah 6:12-13 depicts 'the man whose name is Branch' who will build the temple and rule — fulfilled in Jesus.

Key Bible Verses

Jeremiah 23:5 I will raise up for David a righteous Branch [tsemach], and he shall reign as king.
Zechariah 3:8 I will bring my servant the Branch.
Zechariah 6:12 Behold, the man whose name is the Branch — he shall branch out from his place and build the temple of the LORD.

Word Study

Four 'Branch' prophecies (Isa 4:2; Jer 23:5; Zech 3:8; 6:12) each highlight a different aspect of Messiah — Branch of the LORD, righteous Branch, Servant Branch, Builder Branch.
