H6908 · Hebrew · Old Testament
קָבַץ
qabats
Verb
to gather, collect, assemble

Definition

To gather together — people, grain, or nations. Used of Israel's exile-and-return theology: God scattered his people and will gather them again. Eschatological gathering is a major prophetic theme.

Usage & Theological Significance

The ingathering of Israel is one of prophecy's great themes. God who scattered (H6327 puts) will gather (qabats). This finds partial fulfillment in the return from Babylon and ultimate fulfillment in the messianic age.

Key Bible Verses

Isaiah 43:5 I will bring your offspring from the east, and from the west I will gather [qabats] you.
Ezekiel 36:24 I will take you from the nations and gather [qabats] you from all the countries.
Psalm 106:47 Gather [qabats] us from among the nations, that we may give thanks to your holy name.

Word Study

Paired with H6327 (puts — to scatter), the scatter/gather dynamic describes Israel's covenant history. NT applies the gathering motif to the church (John 11:52: 'gather into one the children of God').
