Arvadi
Adjective, gentilic
Arvadite; inhabitant of Arvad

Definition

The Arvadi are the inhabitants of Arvad, a Phoenician island city. They are listed among the Table of Nations in Genesis 10 as descendants of Canaan through Ham. This gentilic form appears in both the Table of Nations and in Ezekiel's maritime oracle.

Usage & Theological Significance

The Table of Nations in Genesis 10 is unique in ancient literature — a comprehensive, non-polemical account of human diversity and its origins. By tracing all peoples back to Noah's three sons, Scripture establishes the unity of humanity under one Creator and one covenant framework. The Arvadites, though a small trading people, have their place in God's ordering of the nations.
