H7311 · Hebrew · Old Testament
רוּם
rum
Verb
to be high, exalted, lifted up

Definition

To be high or to lift up — applied to God's exaltation, the lifting up of prayer and praise, and the pride of the wicked. God himself is rum: high and exalted above all.

Usage & Theological Significance

Pride and exaltation diverge: God's rum is true majesty; human self-exaltation is pride heading for a fall (Prov 16:18 uses related root). The proper response to God's exaltation is worship.

Key Bible Verses

Isaiah 6:1 I saw the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up [rum].
Psalm 34:3 Oh, magnify [rum] the LORD with me, and let us exalt his name together.
Psalm 75:6-7 Exaltation [rum] comes not from the east or west — but God is the judge who puts down one and lifts up another.

Word Study

Isaiah 6:1 — the inaugural vision of Isaiah — opens with God's exaltation (rum). This becomes the standard against which human pretension collapses and the foundation for prophetic proclamation of God's sovereignty.
