H7379 · Hebrew · Old Testament
רִיב
Riyb
Noun, masculine
Strife / Controversy / Legal Dispute

Definition

The Hebrew riyb (also the verb H7378) denotes strife, contention, controversy, quarrel, or a legal dispute. In judicial contexts it describes a formal legal case or lawsuit; in relational contexts it describes ongoing conflict or grievance. It appears in prophetic literature as the LORD bringing His riyb (lawsuit/indictment) against Israel.

Usage & Theological Significance

The prophetic genre known as the riyb oracle is one of the most dramatic in Scripture. Micah 6:1-8 opens with God calling creation itself as a witness to His lawsuit against Israel: 'Hear, you mountains, the LORD's riyb...' (Micah 6:2). Isaiah 1:18-20 similarly frames God's call to repentance in covenant lawsuit form. This legal framework emphasizes that sin is not merely a moral failure but a covenant breach — it ruptures a relationship that had binding terms. The Good News is that God, the wronged party, takes the initiative to restore relationship (Isaiah 1:18: 'Come now, let us reason together'). Christ absorbs the judgment of the divine riyb on the cross.
