רָנַן
ranan
Verb
to shout for joy, to sing aloud

Definition

Loud, exuberant vocal praise — the kind that cannot be contained. Frequently calls on creation itself to join: trees, mountains, heavens. This is praise as celebration, not ceremony.

Usage & Theological Significance

The Psalms use ranan for the spontaneous overflow of joy before God. Isaiah 44 and 55 call on creation to break forth in singing. Joy in God should exceed any earthly joy.

Key Bible Verses

Psalm 5:11 Let all who take refuge in you rejoice [ranan]; let them ever sing for joy.
Isaiah 44:23 Sing for joy [ranan], O heavens, for the LORD has done it!
Psalm 145:7 They shall pour forth the fame of your abundant goodness and shall sing aloud [ranan] of your righteousness.

Word Study

Creation praise (trees, mountains, heavens rejoicing in ranan) prefigures the 'new creation' praise of Revelation where every creature joins the song. Joy in God is cosmological, not merely personal.
