sheber
Noun, masculine
breaking, fracture, destruction, ruin

Definition

Sheber (H7667) is one of the most theologically powerful words in the Hebrew prophets. It describes shattering destruction β€” the breaking of bones, cities, nations. Jeremiah uses it repeatedly for the wound of God's people. Isaiah uses it for the breaking of Assyria. Yet the word also means the 'interpretation' of a dream β€” breaking open hidden meaning.

Usage & Theological Significance

Jeremiah 8:21 cries, 'For the sheber of the daughter of my people I am broken.' This is the prophet weeping over national disaster. But sheber also points to the possibility of healing: where there is a broken place, there is the potential for God to set and restore. Isaiah 30:26 promises that God will heal the sheber of His people. The breaking precedes the binding.
