Ararat
Noun, proper
Ararat; mountain of descent

Definition

Ararat refers to an ancient kingdom (Urartu) in the region of modern eastern Turkey and Armenia, and specifically to the mountain range where Noah's ark came to rest after the flood. The mountains of Ararat represent the boundary between judgment and new beginning in redemptive history.

Usage & Theological Significance

The theological significance of Ararat is immense: it is the mountain of new beginnings. After the waters of divine judgment receded, the ark rested on Ararat's peaks, and God established His covenant with Noah — promising never again to destroy all life with a flood. Every rainbow is a reminder of this covenant. The mountain of Ararat thus stands as a symbol of God's mercy triumphing over judgment, and of creation's renewal after catastrophe.
