אַשּׁוּר
Ashshur
Proper noun — People/Land
Assyria / Asshur

Definition

Ashshur is the name of both a son of Shem (Genesis 10:22) and the great empire of Assyria that dominated the ancient Near East. The Assyrian Empire became God's instrument of judgment against the northern kingdom of Israel (722 BC) and threatened Judah under Hezekiah.

Usage & Theological Significance

Assyria occupies a major place in biblical prophecy and history. It was the instrument God used to judge Israel's idolatry, yet God also judged Assyria itself for its pride and cruelty (Isaiah 10:5–19). The famous oracle 'Woe to Assyria, the rod of my anger!' demonstrates that God uses even wicked nations as tools of discipline while holding them accountable. Assyria's fall was prophesied and fulfilled, teaching that no earthly empire stands apart from God's sovereign governance.
